![]() An experimental setup was created using a wiretap for traffic duplication to an out-of-band monitoring device. The solution is implemented using the SharpPcap framework for automated packet processing with the desire to make this system open source for further development. The secondary purpose of the NMS is to adjust the QoS policies of the other devices in the network manipulating the value of the DifferentiatedServices (DiffServ) field of the IP packets. The current work presents an implementation of an out-of-band NMS with the primary purpose of detecting and blocking ongoing Domain Name System (DNS) exfiltration attacks which are triggered by other hosts in the network. It ensures that Quality of Service (QoS) policies are correctly applied, but can also have a great impact over the network security preventing attacks and blocking the ongoing actions of attackers in enterprise networks. Packet, Sniffer, Protocol, Address, Network, FrameĪ network management system (NMS) is a vital tool to be used in a corporate network. The outcome can aid network administrators to control Intranet access and provide security. Four network instructions were used in the analysis of the IP traffic and the results displayed the IP and Media Access Control (MAC) address sources and destinations of the frames, Ethernet, IP addresses, User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The IP traffics were captured and analyzed using Wireshark Version 2.0.3. The LAN was deployed on windows 8 with a D-link 16-port switch, category 6 Ethernet cable and other LAN devices. It was implemented using five computer systems configured with static Internet Protocol (IP) addresses used in monitoring the IP traffic on the network by capturing and analyzing live packets from various sources and destinations in the network. This paper was designed to provide Intranet traffic monitoring by sniffing the packets at the local Area Network (LAN) server end to provide security and control.
